Mr. Herman L. Poole, age 93, of Marion, passed away on Friday, March 3, 2017 at the St. Joseph’s Campus of Mission Hospitals in Asheville.  Born in McDowell County on July 23, 1923, Herman was one of seven children born to the late John S. Poole and Odessie Grant Poole Chapman.  He served his country faithfully in the Army Air Corps during World War II.  Herman retired from Drexel Heritage Furniture as a Supervisor in the Cabinet Room.  Herman enjoyed many pursuits in his free time including Bingo, browsing around at the Jamestown Flea Market and especially fishing.  What he enjoyed most, however, was the time he was able to spend with his family, who he loved very much.  He spent the last year of his life at Autumn Care of Marion where he received the finest of care.  The family wishes to express their deep appreciation to the staff there and at St. Joseph’s for the personal and attentive care he received.  A member at Pleasant Gardens Baptist Church, he also recently attended worship services at Bethel Free Will Baptist Church.  His first wife, Imogene Owensby Henline, and his second wife, Helen Turner Poole, preceded him in death.  He was also preceded in death by four brothers, Jack, Dock, Graham and Louis Poole, and two sisters, Callie Sartain and Nell Gatling.

Herman leaves behind three children, Carolyn Breed and husband Larry of Hollister, MO, Johnny Poole and wife Janet of Woodfin and Deborah Sowards and husband Jerry of Marion; three grandchildren, Christopher Shell, Amanda and Laura Poole; four great-grandchildren, Hunter, Gracie, Mike and Katie; two great-great-grandchildren, Avry and Tatum and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, March 6, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Westmoreland Funeral Home in Marion with Rev. Ray Stockton officiating.  The family will receive friends from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.  Burial, with military honors, will follow at McDowell Memorial Park where he will be laid to rest beside Helen.  Flowers are acceptable and appreciated.  Those desiring to make a memorial contribution in his memory are encouraged to consider the American Cancer Society at 120 Executive Park #1, Asheville, NC  28801.
