Mrs. Mary Tennessee “Tennie” McCall Howell, age 98, of Marion, passed away peacefully at Autumn Care of Marion on Wednesday, September 27, 2017, following a period of declining health.  Tennie was born in McDowell County on May 9, 1919 and was the last of eleven children born to the late Rosco and Maggie McCall.

She saw so many changes during her relatively long time on this side of eternity and being one who grew up during the Great Depression, she knew the value that could be found in the simplest things.  From a bit of yarn to getting the good out of a paper towel, she appreciated what it took to buy the necessities of life and to waste anything was not in her nature.

Her beloved husband of 54 years, Ray Lee Howell, preceded her in death and though they never had children they loved each other very much and Tennie was his faithful caregiver during his final days, a role she freely fulfilled and felt blessed to be able to provide.  Tennie was a member of Beverly Hills Baptist Church in Asheville.

Surviving are a number of nieces and nephews including Jan and Mickey Shuford with whom she resided prior to moving to Autumn Care.  In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her brothers Plato, Clayton, Guy, Jonas, Garland, Vick, Sid and Hubert McCall and her sisters Virginia McCall Hollifield and Jamie McCall Hollifield.

A graveside service will be held on Thursday, September 28, 2017 at 3:00 p.m. at McDowell Memorial Park with Rev. Scott Hollifield officiating.  Memorials may be made to Hospice of McDowell County at 575 Airport Road, Marion, NC 28752.  Honorary pallbearers are Don Burnette and Perry Spencer, her good friend who cut her grass and brought her meals to her.  Jamie Burnette will provide music for the service.  The family wishes to express their deep appreciation for the loving care provided to Tennie by both the staff of Autumn Care and Hospice of McDowell County during her illness.  Westmoreland Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
