Mr. Roy Edison Croom, age 88, of Old Fort, went home to be with the Lord and his loving wife of 56 years, Mary, after years of declining health on Sunday, April 23, 2017 at his home.  His beloved family was with him when he passed away.  A lifelong resident of McDowell County, he was born on June 9, 1928 to the late Henry and Ida Noblitt Croom.  Five brothers, Richard, Earl, Clifton, Raymond and Charles, as well as four sisters, Clara, Irene, Pauline and Dorothy, two granddaughters, Becky Philbeck and Heather Norman, and a son-in-law, Dave Sheaffer, preceded him in death.

Surviving are one son, Dean Croom; five daughters, Brenda King and husband Sonny, Shirley Sheaffer, Paula Nelon, Wanda Manick and Patricia McGee and husband Allen; two sisters, Lucille Creasman and Lillian Smith; his sister-in-law, Irene Ricker; twenty grandchildren, thirty great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren along with multiple nieces and nephews.

Roy was a hard working family man who loved life and loved his family.  He retired from Drexel Furniture Company after 51 years of loyal service and was very dedicated to and loved serving his community every minute he possibly could with the Crooked Creek Volunteer Fire Department for 20 years.

He was a very avid farmer who loved his tractor and especially working in the hay fields.  There’s never been a harder working man than Roy Croom.  Your work is done here Daddy, you have left a hole in your family’s lives that will never be filled.  We love you more than you could have ever known and we’ll miss you every day and will be longing for the day when we will see you again in heaven.  You and Mama have a big reunion and be watching for us cause we’re coming!

A service to honor and celebrate his Homegoing will be held on Wednesday, April 26, 2017 at 3:00 p.m. at Cherry Springs Baptist Church with Rev. Marty Conner officiating and Rev. Bill Pate assisting.  The family will receive friends from 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. prior to the service at the church.  Burial will follow in Cherry Springs Memorial Park and the Crooked Creek Fire Dept. will serve as pallbearers.  Flowers are acceptable and appreciated.  Those wishing to make a memorial contribution in his memory are encouraged to consider the Crooked Creek Volunteer Fire Department at 367 Cherry Springs Road, Old Fort, NC 28762.
